Rocky Horror Picture Show Easy Dress Up
As Halloween draws near, the call of spooky movies becomes louder and louder. A cult classic for the Halloween season always worth watching is, of course,The Rocky Horror Picture Show, known for its viewer-centric live showings and floor shows.
If fans of the movie ever want to attend one of the raucous live screenings, costumes are strongly recommended--and there are a myriad of amazing costumes to choose from in the film. From gold speedos to sequined corsets,Rocky Horror has it all, and the cream of the crop would be fantastic dress-up choices.
10 Columbia, Magenta, & Riff Raff At The Wedding
Avid watchers ofRocky Horror will know that Magenta, Columbia, and Riff Raff can be seen in the background during the musical number "Dammit, Janet!" At the beginning of the song, Magenta and Riff Raff are seen wearing outfits reminiscent of the art piece "American Gothic," complete with a pitchfork. Then they go inside the chapel and Columbia joins them.
The outfits are almost pilgrim-like and it's a fun and unexpected deviation from the trio's louder looks from the rest of the film. It's also an Easter egg from the movie that they're in the scene at all, and even their makeup makes them almost completely unrecognizable.
9 Brad & Janet At The Wedding
Brad's plaid tie and cummerbund paired with Janet's lilac skirt suit and white sun hat blowing in the wind make this one of the most iconic and well-known looks of the movie. While it's not the most entertaining thing the pair wears inRocky Horror, it's the first outfit viewers think of when they hear "Brad and Janet."
It's also the first official glimpse viewers get into the main characters of the story, which gives the costumes an added special meaning to the audience watching.
8 Eddie's Leather Jacket & Head Wound
What could be more Halloween than a gory look? When Eddie comes flying out of the freezer on a motorcycle to sing "Hot Patootie! (Bless My Soul)," he couldn't look more scary-cool. He's got a biker jacket on that's cut into a vest by hand. It's got animal print, chains, and a red-painted sun design on the back.
Eddie's use of accessories makes this outfit amazing, as he rides around, sings, and dances, all with a saxophone over his shoulder like a handbag. And, one of the things that make this look truly unique is Eddie's very prominent wound across his forehead, inflicted some time ago by Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
7 Riff Raff & Magenta As Aliens
In a bizarre twist that no one saw coming, Riff Raff and Magenta reveal themselves to be not only aliens, but plotting against Dr. Frank-N-Furter... and incestuous siblings - a part ofRocky Horror thathas not aged well, although it was weird at the time as well.
Incest aside, they detail their plan while wearing magnificent insulated silver minidresses with pointed black shoulder details and garters. Magenta has a Bride of Frankenstein hairdo and Riff Raff has a tiny bun on the top of his head. It's exactly what you would expect from aliens of the planet Transexual of the Transylvania galaxy.
6 Rocky's Golden Speedo
As the "Frankenstein's Monster" equivalent for the movie, viewers would think Rocky would look more like a monster. But, he is the bronzed god that Dr. Frank-N-Furter created for himself, so he's tanned, bleach blonde, and golden metallic-speedo-sporting.
Rocky, who famously does not sing his own song inRocky Horror, even has matching metallic gold boxer's shoes to complete his look. Rocky is the titular character of the movie and it takes a lot of confidence and bravery to come into the world with such a flashy and memorable costume, and he gets extra credit for that.
5 Magenta's Maid & Riff Raff's Butler Outfits
If the wedding looks are the most iconic for Brad and Janet, these looks are the most iconic for Magenta and Riff Raff. Who could forget Riff Raff's giant faux hump that was an homage to Dr. Frankenstein's assistant, Igor? The look is so recognizable that it was used as a horror movie easter egg in American Horror Story: Coven. It was also a very bold and amazing choice to wear the tuxedo vest as a shirt--not to mention the very obvious blood splatters on it.
For Magenta, her play on a classic maid outfit is equal parts creepy and sultry. She even has an old-timey apron and French maid hat, but spices up the look with garter tights and her signature heavy black eyeliner and dark red lip. The two were only pretending to be maid and butler, but they totally looked the part.
4 Dr. Frank-N-Furter's Lab Look
Dr. Frank-N-Furter has some amazing costume changes throughoutRocky Horror, and one of the best ones is his mad scientist outfit in the lab while showcasing Rocky to his party guests. he wears a dirty green surgical gown with hot pink rubber gloves over fishnet tights and pumps.
Paired with his pearl earrings and necklace, Dr. Frank-N-Furter reveals his creation. If fans look closely, there's a few uncleaned spots of blood on the surgical gown that are most likely from Eddie. Fans also have some interesting theories about the pink triangle on his gown, some thinking it's a reference to the symbol given to gay prisoners in Nazi concentration camps and reclaimed as a symbol for gay pride. This outfit is one of many ways the movie musical celebrates diversity.
3 Columbia's "Time Warp" Ensemble
Columbia sports one of the more intricate and fun-colored outfits of the film for a majority of her time onscreen. She wears a sequined multi-colored corset with shorts that have multi-colored ribbons sewn on. During the "Time Warp" number, she pairs it with tap shoes, a gold sequined jacket, and a top hat for her dance solo and dons a pink face mask over it in the lab.
Columbia has one of the fewer outfit changes, but it may be because her look is so great. The sequins and sparkles reflect light to the camera and the bright and shiny costume perfectly reflects her bubbly countenance and high-pitched voice. She has kid-like excitement throughout the events of the night, and her look translates that.
2 The Floor Show
The Floor Show features some of the more extravagant and over-the-top outfits ofRocky Horror, and that's saying something. Each character has exaggerated clown-like makeup on, and a can-can style corset with feather boas, fishnet garters, and full-length fingerless gloves.
Besides "Rose Tint My World" being one of the catchiest songs of the movie, the dancing that accompanies this scene in these outfits is unforgettable--with Brad's leg shaking taking the cake. The entirety ofRocky Horror takes gender roles and turns them on their heads, making it one of the most influential movie musicals of all time. This scene especially does a wonderful job of that because all of the characters are wearing the same thing, regardless of gender, and they all look fantastic.
1 Dr. Frank-N-Furter's "Sweet Transvestite" Debut
Tim Curry's depiction of Dr. Frank-N-Furter is the heart ofThe Rocky Horror Picture Show. He based the voice and mannerisms he used for the character on his mother when she would talk on the phone mixed with Queen Elizabeth II, which is both hilarious and smart. A behind-the-scenes Rocky Horror detail is that his entrance into the film, complete with a full-blown cloak with a Dracula-esque collar concealing the most famous outfit of the film, was actually his film debut.
Dr. Frank-N-Furter's black sequined corset, fishnet garters, black glitter gloves, and pearl jewelry are perfectly complemented by his amazing makeup and "Mom" tattoo. He also spends the entire movie in sky-high heels and that is impressive for anyone. Curry adds a decked-out leather jacket and then a star-patterned bodysuit to this base look later on in the film.
